Dengue Fever situation in Southeast Asia, 2016

Abstract
Dengue is transmitted by the bite of an mosquito(Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus) infected with dengue viruses. It is not contagious from person to person. It occurs in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world. Among the estimated 2.5 billion people at risk globally, more than 70% reside in Asia Pacific countries, according to the World Health Organization. In the past 50 years, the incidence of dengue worldwide has increased 30-fold as the fastest spreading vector-borne viral disease, the number of countries reporting cases of dengue increased from 3 to 128 countries. WHO estimates there may be 50-100 million dengue infections worldwide every year.
Dengue cases have seen increases in several countries of Southeast Asia, health officials of countries are expecting dengue cases to rise in 2016 due to warmer conditions caused by the 2015 El Nino phenomenon.
In Korea, the number of imported dengue cases increased by 242% (19 to 65) in 2016 compared to 2015. Most cases were from Southeast Asian countries such as Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia.
